If you’re an Electronic producer, Beatport is where your music needs to be. But with over 9M tracks uploaded already and thousands of new labels signing up to Beatport each year, spotting a rising artist among all that “traffic” can get tricky.

However, as we believe that nothing in the music business should depend on luck or chance, we’ve put together a couple of useful tips. In three easy steps, you’ll be able to spot up-and-coming musicians faster and quickly sign them to your label, book them for a gig, or hit them up for a collab.

What you can do is:

➡️ Follow Beatport’s channels.

➡️ Know where to look on the Beatport charts, and what for.

➡️ Use the music industry’s key resource: analytics.

Let’s get into the details.

#1 Follow Beatport’s channels to detect artists on the rise

Beatport has recently put ab emphasis on additional exposure for emerging artists:

  • the Beatportal blog offers monthly editorial features, such as “On the Radar”, covering new names in Electronic Music,
  • the Beatport Next Artist program is dedicated to boosting the visibility of six selected artists.

A good way of staying on top of such features is signing up for their newsletter or following their social media. Check out who they follow and who follows them, in order to get a broader picture of Electronic artists, labels and media networks.

Following these channels is super convenient, but does have a downside. The selections are curated and public, meaning that quite a lot of people have already heard about the same artists you might be interested in.

#2 Know where to look on the Beatport charts, and what for

Though the Hype and Overall charts can be interesting, you’ll want to pay close attention to the “Top 100 in genre” the most. Browse the genres you’re interested in, and definitely check out House, Melodic House & Techno and Techno (Peak Time / Driving), as they were the most popular genres on Beatport in 2020.

If you see a certain artist popping up all the time, it means that they are making waves in their genre right now. For example, we’ve noticed Alex Turner performing well in Melodic House & Techno, Modern Studies rousing some interest in House, and Space Modular making an impact in Techno (Peak Time / Driving).

Here are a couple of charts you could explore:

👉 Tech Housethe main Beatport genre of 12 of the 30 top-rising labels in 2020.

👉 Progressive Housethe #8 ranked genre based on the popularity of tracks on the Beatport Top 100 Chart in 2020.

👉 Beatport’s newest genre chart – Electro (Classic / Detroit / Modern).

Dig around to find promising artists, see if they’re signed to a label, and maybe even discover similar acts. If you’re an event organizer, you might consider creating a label showcase (an event showcasing artists on the same label, either as a live gig or a livestream) and discussing an arrangement where one artist recommends other artists they'd like to see play.

If it sounds like this takes considerable time and effort - you’re right, it does. But you could unleash a secret weapon to speed up the process …
